Plantation shutters are one of the more popular choices for many homes. They are primarily interior shutters which have a wide slat size and are usually a permanent fixture. They consist of wide louvres inside a robust frame, and consist of upper and lower sections which can be operated independently from each other. With proper care, Shutters can be a wonderful long term solution to window furnishings for your home.

Because of their larger slat size, plantation shutters help to let in large amounts of light and also maximise airflow to help regulate a room's temperature. These shutters are especially popular in tropical and warmer climates. Plantation Shutters come in a variety of materials and can be colour matched to almost any surrounding.

The main types of Shutters are as follows:

PVC Shutters

If you want to invest in shutters, PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) shutters are one of the most preferred choices. These shutters are the most sought after due to their lower cost of manufacturing and ease of care, maintenance and upkeep. These shutters are also resistant to fading and UV rays, and also to moisture and heat. They are finished with sealing caps on their edges.

Aluminum Shutters

Aluminum shutters are typically used for external applications. The reason behind opting for these shutters is that they are more durable and weather resistant than other materials. They can be used in outdoor areas such as patios, balconies, verandahs and windows, and provide a stylish yet functional solution for your outdoor entertaining areas.

Timber Shutters

Timber shutters are usually at the higher end of the scale when it comes to price. However that higher price is reflected in the amazing visual appeal of timber shutters.  There are many different types of wood used for Timber Shutters, including Alder, Basswood, and Cedarwood, as well as composite wood where slats are made from several combined wood types, or lower priced options such as MDF and laminate. Timber shutters offer the ability for them to be painted, sanded and stained to your desired finish.

Plantation Shutters are a wonderful addition to any home and not only are very appealing visually, but they are incredibly functional for a tropical climate. Once installed they are very easy to operate and maintain, usually only requiring a wipe with a dry cloth or a soft brush vacuum attachment to remove dust, or a wipe down with a damp cloth, then a wipe over with a dry cloth to ensure their longevity.

As we have mentioned above, Shutters are suited to both internal and external applications and can provide a real lift to a dull area as they become the focal point. They can provide security and privacy, and can be fitted in many types of installations such as hinged, bi-fold, sliding, French-door style, or fixed in place.
