There are many styles of blinds, but they can generally be grouped into 2 types, roller blinds, and panel blinds. Roller blinds are usually a single sheet of material that is rolled around a cylinder to allow ease of operation in having them open or closed. Panel blinds are made up of horizontal slats of various types of hard or semi hard materials, which are held together by cords that run through the blind slats. The cord mechanism is used to open and close them as required.

Blinds provide a very modern look, and at the same time, are easy to use and offer energy efficiency. Most blind styles can be manufactured to operate manually, or via a motorised function. They come in a huge range of styles and colours to suit different areas of your home. They are simple and chic and have many benefits that may surprise you, such as giving you more control over the amount of light being allowed into your space, as well as having a wide range to fit just about any purpose and room. You can use them on their own or combine them with soft fabric curtain for maximum effect.

Cairns blinds can help you navigate through the numerous types of blinds to determine the right solution for you. Some of the common choices of blinds include:

  • Vertical blinds
  • Venetian blinds
  • Panel blinds
  • Roman blinds
  • Roller blinds
  • Double roller blinds
  • Blackout blinds

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are made up of vertical vanes that are long and specially designed to be connected to a track that controls their sliding movement. They are perfectly suited to sliding door coverings or wide windows spaces. Their vertical design means that they are less likely to collect dust and are usually faster to operate as they draw to the side rather then lifting and lowering.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are one of the most common types of blinds and are made up of singular horizontal slats or strips that are usually made of vinyl, metal, timber, or PVC. The slats are held by cloth fabric tapes or cords which allows all slats to be operated in unison. This style of blinds are the most common because of their durability and practicality.

Panel Blinds

Panel blinds, often referred to as Panel Glide Blinds, are similar to vertical blinds, however they are a more contemporary design where the vertical panels are much wider than traditional verticals. They use a panel track which has a number of channels, sized based on the number of panels required. They are particularly suited to sliding doors, large windows or even as room dividers.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are similar to venetian blinds, however their panels are usually made out of fabric and are raised to form pleated folds instead of being stacked. Roman blinds are usually available in either hard or soft fabrics, depending upon the quality of the fabric being used, and the desired look for your space. In the industry, they are often referred to as ‘shades’ as they are primarily used for blocking out the sun. Unlike many other styles, Roman blinds are not usually suited to areas with a lot of moisture, such as bathrooms or windows above sinks.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are a single piece of material which is rolled around a metal cylinder. They can be rolled up and down on the roller to uncover or cover the window. Roller blinds include one long piece of stiffened fabric, operated by either a spring mechanism inside the cylinder or a manual cord that is wound to adjust their level. Roller blinds can be used singularly, or can also be doubled up with a block-out layer to form double roller blinds.

Blockout Blinds

Blockout blinds are essentially blinds made of material thick enough to stop the outside light from entering the room. These blinds stop the sharp rays of the sun and are available in different sizes and colors and are designed to block out 100% of the light. For this reason, as well as the insulation properties they provide, block out blinds are ideally suited to bedrooms.
